- Don’t leave without important documents: The desire to get out and get on can be strong, but you will need to get copies of all of the relevant financial documents, such as pay stubs and tax documents before you leave the home. If your spouse chooses to be difficult down the road, you will still be able to get a hold of them, but it could become an expensive hassle.
- Take inventory of valuables: If you are leaving the house, make sure to get pictures and keep inventory of all the valuables you and your spouse own. These things could mysteriously go missing during the proceedings. Make sure to catalog your spouse’s valuables in addition to your own.
- Don’t forget about custody: If you have children and you are hoping to get shared parenting rights, you should pick a new home close enough to your marital home that it won’t interfere with the children’s schedules. This may make things easier for you and your children later on.
