Divorce will affect more than just your marriage. If you let it, your divorce can negatively impact every other aspect of your life. Your work, your relationships, your children, your finances, and anything else important to you could be damaged if you don’t learn how to minimize how your divorce will affect your day-to-day schedule.
How to Get Through Every Day After Divorce
- Ditch the Distractions – It may not feel right, but after divorce, you should remove any family photos with you and your spouse from your workplace and home. Store them somewhere for the time being.
- Rekindle Past Friendships – It’s important that you replace bad distractions (i.e. reminders of your divorce) with good ones. It’s possible that you may lose a few friends over the course of the divorce, but you can reconnect with old friends. Having someone to talk to on a regular basis about things besides divorce is very important.
- Find a Hobby – Again, finding positive distractions is key to surviving the day-to-day after divorce. Find something that is so engrossing you couldn’t possibly think about divorce while doing it. Start reading again, play in pickup basketball games, join a cooking class.
- Save Divorce Talk for Later – The best way to prevent your divorce from impacting your life is to avoid reading or talking about it until the end of the day. Don’t read or respond to calls or emails pertaining to your divorce until after work. Not only will that keep you focused at work, but it will eliminate the need for repeated messages and calls throughout the day. Take care of it all at once at the end of the day.
The old “fake it ‘til you make it” trick is especially useful during this time. Don’t let your divorce negatively impact the rest of your life. Remember, you are not alone, and there is help available if you need it.
