Recently reacquired Texas Rangers outfielder Josh Hamilton has filed for divorce in Tarrant County.
Hamilton, who was traded from the Los Angeles Angels back to Texas last month, played for five seasons with the Rangers before signing a $125 million contract with the Angels in 2012.
According to CBS News, the divorce filing took place in February, before Hamilton’s trade. Court documents indicate that the reason for the divorce filing is a “discord or conflict of personalities.”
Hamilton’s filing indicates that he does not want his wife Katie to use the couple’s Maserati and a vintage 1972 Chevrolet Blazer. Additionally it asks that she “not be allowed to hide their children from him, or [allow] a romantic partner from overnight visits while their children [are] home.”
The couple has four children, ages 3 to 14. Hamilton, a recovering drug addict, recently suffered through a reported relapse while he was playing for the Angels. The Angels attempted to discipline him and avoid paying him following the relapse. However, an arbitrator recently ruled that the team could not punish him, and he was quickly traded back to Texas. Hamilton led the Rangers to the World Series in 2010 and 2011.
How Are Assets Divided During a Divorce?
Texas is a community property state, meaning assets acquired during your marriage belong to both parties. Nevertheless, there are ways you may be able to keep assets through strategic legal discussions between both parties. Additionally, in Texas, each spouse gets to keep his or her own separate property, or items that were acquired before a marriage. Items considered separate property often include gifts and inherited belongings. Sometimes, these items can lead to disputes.
Unfortunately, one of the most taxing aspects of any divorce case is the division of marital assets. If you have items that you would like to discuss saving including houses and vehicles, heirlooms and retirement accounts, our Denton County divorce attorneys can help you. Additionally, if you have children, you will want to make sure that your child support payments are fair and that your visitation rights are sensible in the event you do not receive custody. If you are a high-income earner, the failure to receive sophisticated counsel could result in substantial losses.
