It may come as surprise to some people, but many of the clients we work with during divorce cases are young and have only been married for a few years.
This is because the average age for a person to become married in the U.S. is about 28 years old, while according to the National Center for Health Statistics, about 50 percent of all marriages end in divorce. This means that there are many young Americans, in their 20s or 30s, who end up becoming divorcees.
We want you to know that there is no shame in becoming divorced at a young age. The process often leads to better things for the people involved. The majority of clients we work with are unhappy with their marriages, which can lead to complications with depression and infidelity. For many people, it is better to escape an unhappy marriage at a young age rather than wait.
Often, the earlier a divorce takes place, the fewer complications there are during the legal process. This is because there are fewer items that need to be resolved—such as child support, child custody or the division of assets—as people are less likely to have significant properties or children. In some cases, young people seeking a separation are able to work out uncontested divorces, and they are able to save money by not disputing assets or payments.
Tips for People Who Divorce at a Young Age
We bring this subject up because recently we read a column in the Huffington Post that included pieces of advice for divorcees in their 20s. The writer, Brittany Wong, spoke to lawyers, psychologists and financial advisors. Among their advice:
- Chalk the divorce up to a lapse in judgment
- Learn from the mistakes you made in your marriage
- Do not rant about your divorce on social media (what you say on social media outlets could impact your case)
- Take comfort in your actual friends (call them up and avoiding discussing your situation online)
- See your divorce as a gift, not a failure
